Spark Student Motivation: Sidewalk Chalk

Happy Saturday! Let's share our motivating ideas!

Don't all kids like sidewalk chalk??!!

Let students show their creativity while learning at the same time!
On such a beautiful day, it seemed the perfect idea to review our vocabulary words!
They were working on their weekly vocabulary: the above photo portrays perish.

This young man wanted to be part of his chalk artwork!
Here we see waft floating upward.
Very quick and easy way to assess students' knowledge!
Sidewalk chalk can in so many ways!
Spelling words, math, timelines, number lines, setting, visualization, review lessons, so many possibilities!
They loved showing off their creativity with chalk!
Engaging, inexpensive, fun, and MOTIVATING!

  1. I've never used sidewalk chalk with my students, but what a fun idea. Looks like a great way to switch things up. It's way too cold for us to do anything like this now...I'll have to save this idea for spring!

  2. I like sidewalk chalk. I haven't done this in a long time. It's one of those things I forget about unless I see someone else doing it. I'm going to go drop this idea onto my Wunderlist of lists that keeps on growing! Lol! Happy Saturday my sweet friend. By this time next week we will be on Thanksgiving Break! Very motivating!

  4. What a fun and motivating idea! My students would LOVE this! If only I didn't live in Seattle where we've crossed into the it's-cold-and-raining-from-now-until-spring season :) I'm going to save this winner idea for a day when Spring fever has set in! :)

  5. What a fun way to practice vocabulary. It's a little cold in Ohio to this now, but I have it pinned for next spring.
    Thank you!

  6. Thanks for sharing how you use sidewalk chalk - I have used it for word study but I think I will have to try it for math facts too. I am NOT jealous of your weather. I am sure you will be jealous of my pics of snow writing soon : )
Hope you have a great weekend - thanks for keeping me motivated and my local Dollar Tree happy too : )

  9. What a great idea to use the sidewalk chalk! Our snow just melted and we are supposed to get a storm on Tuesday, but I bet we could have students draw in the snow! Lol. I will have to remember this for the spring. We have a large concrete pad outside by the playground! Thank you for hosting a great linky party. :)

  10. I just used chalk on Friday with the kids. Our 1st grade reading buddies had just come in for us to help them practice reading, math facts, and spelling - when one of the little girls puked all over my carpet and a student's chair. That meant we had to exit the room until the custodian could clean it up… so out came the chalk and they practiced their words and math facts on the cement outside.

  11. So clever! Where did you get your vocabulary words? We don't have an official program and I used to use Flocabulary so I'm just curious. :)

    Have a great week!

  12. Great idea! I'm going to have to do this on Friday!
There's a teacher in my school who uses sidewalk chalk to make kids feel extra special on their birthdays. She writes "Happy Birthday, ______" on the sidewalk outside of her classroom (we have many portable classes.) I think I need to pick up some chalk at Target and start doing both of these ideas! :) Thanks for your thoughts!
