Spark Student Motivation: Reading in the Bathroom!

It's S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y!!! And a 3 D-A-Y W-E-E-K-E-N-D!!
Not that I want to promote my students spending a lot of time in the bathroom, but they may as well be learning right??!! This picture is the before of my classroom bathroom...boring & bland.

Now, see the improvement? Bright and colorful AND high interest reading material! What is this reading material? Appropriate reading material for a bathroom of course! Facts about pee and poop! LOL! These books have lots of non-fiction text features too: timelines, subheadings, photos, captions, information boxes, bold print, index, table of contents, etc.
This is one of my favorite pages...knowing about poop can save your life! Important tips for survival! :)
I've blogged about using The Truth About Poop  as a mentor text, but it's perfect bathroom décor too! My students love it!
I took excerpts out of each of these books-it may seem a little gross, but students LOVE when teachers say, "POOP"! Which results in 100% engagement and active listening! Even if it's gross, students can't help but listening to these interesting facts!
Geese (pooping factories) poop every 12 minutes! WOW!
Sloths do everything slow, including pooping, only once a week!
Vultures poop on themselves to keep cool!
Elephants pee up to 13 gallons a day!
These books tell us the information textbooks don't tell us! (How does a knight wearing 50 pounds of armor go to the bathroom? Why was there a huge pile of poop beneath the window of that tower in Bohemia?

It may not be for everyone, but I wanted to share some interesting reading material with you! At least if they're in the bathroom, they'll be reading and learning! One of my students came out a few days ago and said, "Mrs. Miller, do you want to know what I learned in the bathroom?"
Score!

I hope you enjoy your long weekend! See you next week!

  1. That's really funny, my boys would spend all day in there! We don't have classroom bathrooms though :(

  3. Have you ever read the book The Giggler Treatment? The kids think it is hilarious and it's always a favorite because of the poop. I always see the 4th graders next door sneaking over to my bathroom even though theirs is open. I think it's because I have Rockstar pictures all over the walls in there. I need to put up some reading material for them next year. XOXO

  6. First of all, you have YOUR OWN BATHROOM? That is a totally foreign concept to me. I can't even imagine that.

But if I DID have my own bathroom, I'd probably decorate it like you did. Niiiiice!
I'm gonna have to go on Amazon and search for books about pee and poop. Nothing grabs the kids' attention more than the words "pee" "poop" and "underwear". LOL!!!!

  7. That's awesome! I was thinking of doing this in the students' bathroom on our floor. I was a RA in college and we used to have to change the articles in the bathroom stalls every two weeks, as part of our job. Those articles were from Cosmo though ;) haha

  10. I'm not sure I'm QUITE ready for the hilarity that would result if I bought those books, but maybe in the future I'll think about it! What a fun way to get students reading! My students LOVE to ask if I have recess DUTY. One of the kids pointed out the other day that they are getting more mature because they don't laugh when I say "duty" anymore! :)

  11. I can't believe you have taken your motivational tricks to the bathroom - what a great idea. I have been to public washrooms with ads in the stalls - but this is even better! Your choice of reading material - perfection!! Will have to bring this up at our next staff meeting : )
