Spark Student Motivation: Must Read Books

HAPPY SATURDAY! IT'S TIME TO GET MOTIVATED!

Reading is my favorite part of the day...there's just so many opportunities to teach, to learn, to grow!
There are many things I do in my class to get my students excited about reading, but a recent addition to my motivational tactics are Must Read Books Reading Labels.

This idea came to me at the beginning of the year, and I WISH so much I would've thought of it years ago! The inside of my books would be filled with names! My original idea was to motivate other students to want to read a particular book if they saw all those names listed....especially if it was a student they knew-"Oh, Kyler read this book, then I have to read it too!"
I just didn't realize when I thought of this idea it would be just as motivational to finish a book to write your name on the label!

I like how a couple of students left a rating!

I asked some of my students to come back from last year to find some books they read last year, so they could sign the labels to get us started. When my current students saw my former students writing on the labels, they couldn't wait to join in on the action!

These labels are available for my students to take and add to any book!
I'm not "policing" who writes on the labels, but I told my students I'd like them to pass the Reading Counts test before they sign. They can add it to any chapter book or picture book from my library.

We have so much power and pressure to create readers and leaders in our classroom right? I'm so excited this motivational idea came to me! Who knew a label could be so exciting??!!
I just added it to my classroom and I know it will be the spark for some of those reluctant readers!

**If you'd like a copy of these labels (#5164-6 per page), just leave a comment and an email and I'll send them to you! :O) Cute frames by I'm Lovin' Lit!

  7. I love the labels! It reminds me of the old days when you'd actually sign a library card to check out a book---you knew a book was good if a whole lot of people had checked it out! I would love a copy: shammanaj at gmail.com. Thank you!

  10. Oh Joanne! This is fan-tas-tic!! The kids would be THRILLED to see their names inside the books. Kinda like that old library check-out system {before we went computerized}. The kids still love to find the old books that still have the check-out cards in them, and read the names of those who read that book previously. I admit, I still do that too. ; ) I must do this. Please send me a copy of this. THANKS!!
