Math Mentor Text: Math Curse and Winners!

Linking up with the cuties Amanda & Stacia for their Mentor Text linky.

I wish I incorporated more literature during math (I have several books, just time is the enemy!), but one of my favorites is Math Curse.
In the story, a girl wakes up one day, and everything she sees or does becomes a math problem. She sees math problems everywhere, so much so that she thinks her teacher placed a “math curse” on her. After reading the book, my students then make their own Math Curse book based off of the original. Their story must takes place in a 24 hour period, contain 15 problems (addition, multiplication, measurement, time, etc.) with answers on the last page, and include illustrations. I promote this assignment as a "family project" and send home directions so the whole family can participate. The students take turns sharing their book with the class-it's a really fun spin on math, reading, and writing!

Each student used their creative juices to create their Math Curse books!

Congratulations ladies!!! I hope your kids love them as much as mine do!

  2. Math Curse is fantastic! I remember in the first year of my teaching course my Numeracy lecturer read this book to us at the beginning of a lecture and it was so memorable. I went out and bought it straight away!

I love your idea of students creating their own Math Curse book. Such a clever idea!
